We Didn’t Realise We Were Spending $800 a Month on Takeaways

It Wasn't one big Decision

If you had asked me a few months ago how much we were spending on takeaways, I wouldn’t have said $800 a month.

Honestly, I don’t think I would have believed it.

It wasn’t one big purchase, or a conscious decision to spend that much. It was just life. Busy days, tired evenings, and those small “Just for tonight” moments that felt easier in the moment.

When you’re feeding a family, sometimes you just want something quick that keeps eveyrone happy and avoids the chaos.

And that’s exactly how it crept in.

The Moment We added it all up

Financial stress was becoming a constant. Realising we were overspending, and not understanding why, or where. Slowly going into dept – ‘just to survive’. Not realising how simple our solution was. Because, life was so busy! And we thought we were keeping track of things in our minds.

Nothing changed until we actually sat down and looked at the numbers.

That was the turning point.

Seeing it written down made it real in a way it hadn’t been before. It wasn’t just the cost – it was the realisation that we were spending far more than we needed to, without even noticing.

We weren’t being careless.

We just didn’t have a system

We Didn't Earn More - We Changed How We Do Things

We didn’t suddenly haver more money.

We didn’t cut everything out overnight either.

What we did was start being more intentional.

We began

  • planning meals ahead of time
  • using what we already had
  • making simple meals that we knew would work
  • and slowly replacing takeaways with something we could manage at home

One of the biggest changes for us was introducing simple routines – like a weekly pizza night – so we still had something to look forward to, without the cost.

Why Takeaways Add Up So Quickly

Takeaways feel small in the moment.

But when you look at:

  • multiple nights a week
  • a big family to feed
  • delivery fees or extras

…it adds up faster than most of us realise.

It’s not about blame – it’s about awareness.

What's helped us start changing

We didn’t try to do everything perfectly.

We started small.

A few things that helped us straight away:

  • having a rough plan for the week
  • keeping easy meal options on hand
  • using pantry staples more intentionally
  • reminding ourselves that simple is enough

Over time, those small changes started to stack up – and that’s where the real savings came from.

This was just the beginning

That moment – realising how much we were spending – was the start of everything.

It pushed us to rethink how we approach groceries, meals, and our weekly budget.

And while we’re still learning and improving, we’ve already seen a big difference.

Less stress.
More control.
And a lot less money disappearing without us noticing.

If you're feeling the same

If groceries or takeaways feel like they’re getting out of control, you’re not alone. We were there too.

You don’t need to change everything overnight.

Stat look g at numbers.

That one step can change everything!
