Where the Money for Bulk Buying Comes From

Bulk Buy 8kg Sour Cream

If you’ve ever wondered how families afford bulk buying – this is exactly how we do it.

One of the most common questions I get is:

“Where does the money come from for bulk buying?”

Because I get it – it can look like you need extra money sitting around to buy things in bulk.

The truth is… we don’t.

What this looks like in real life

We Don't Have Extra Money

We’re feeding a family of seven, and like a lot of families, we used to feel like there was never anything left over.

Bulk buying sounded like a good idea – but not something we could actually afford to do.

Until we changed how we approached our weekly grocery budget.

What We Started Doing Instead

Instead of trying to do one big bulk shop, we started small.

Each week, if we came in under our grocery budget – even by a little – I would put some of that money aside.

Not all of it. Just a portion.

Some weeks it might only be a few dollars.

But over time, it started to add up.

Letting It Build Over Time

That money then becomes our bulk buy fund.

So when something goes on special – like meat, pantry staples, or even things like sugar – we’re ready.

We’re not scrambling to find extra money.

We’re just using money we’ve already saved intentionally.

Why This Works So Well

This has been one of the biggest shifts for us.

Because instead of:

  • overspending one week
  • trying to “fix it” the next

We now:

  • stay under budget where we can
  • and use that to save even more later

It turns budgeting into something that builds momentum.

It's Not About Having More Money

It’s about using what you already have differently.

We didn’t suddenly earn more.

We just became more intentional with how we used what we already had.

This is part of our System

Bulk buying isn’t something we do all the time.

It’s something we build up to.

And it works alongside everything else we do:

  • planning meals
  • cooking from pantry staples
  • making things from scratch
  • stretching what we already have

If you want to start

You don’t need to start big.

Even putting aside a few dollars when you can is enough to get started.

It builds over time – and once you see it working, it becomes a habit.

Bulk buys are part of our system

Our system is simple, and has helped us go down by almost $900 on our monthly grocery spend.

Our system includes:

  • Plan weekly
  • Use pantry items
  • Make instead of buy
  • Save leftover budget
  • Bulk buy when it counts

If you’re trying to get your grocery budget under control, this is exactly where we started.
