One of the biggest ways we’ve reduced our grocery bill is by making a few things ourselves instead of buying them.

Not everything – just the simple things that:

  • don’t take much time
  • use ingredients we already have
  • and actually save money

When your’e feeding a big family, those small swaps really add up.

See One of Our Simple Swaps

Why We Do This

We’re not trying to do everything from scratch.

We just focus on the things that are:

  • easy to make
  • cheaper than buying
  • used regularly in our home

That’s what makes it realistic to stick to.

Milk (stretching What We Have)

If we’re running low on milk, we don’t always go to the store.

We:

  • make powdered milk
  • or mix it with fresh milk (half fresh, half made up powdered milk)

This helps us:

  • avoid extra trips to the store
  • stay within budget
  • make what we have last longer

DIY Cream Cheese

Instead of buying cream cheese, we make our own when we need it.

It’s:

  • quick
  • easy
  • made from pantry ingredients
  • cheaper than store bought

Especially helpful for baking and snacks.

DIY Pesto

We make pesto using whatever we have on hand.

Usually:

  • fresh basil (We invested in a Basil plant)
  • almonds instead of expensive nuts
  • simple pantry ingredients

It’s flexible, affordable and still tastes great.

DIY Sweetened Condensed Milk

This has been one of the biggest money-savers compared to the prices in store.

Instead of buying tins, we make our own using:

  • sugar
  • water
  • milk powder

It makes a big batch and works out much cheaper than buying multiple cans.

What we've learned

You don’t need to make everything from scratch.

Just start with:

  • one or two things
  • items you already use often

And build from there.

Where the Real Savings Happen

The savings aren’t just in the item itself.

They come from:

  • fewer trips to the store
  • less impulse buying
  • using what you already have

That’s what makes the biggest difference over time.

What People are Saying
